“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me… to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor” (Isaiah 61)
Although it seems a bit presumptuous, I really identify with the call in Isaiah 61 that Jesus claimed as His own. In that passage, Isaiah says about the coming Messiah (and I think those who would come after Him and aspire to be His hands, His feet and His voice), that He was anointed by God “to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor”. While He was here on earth, Jesus lived that out by proclaiming that complete hope, healing, forgiveness and peace was finally present… right there in front of them. Jesus was saying, “this is an unprecedented moment for you… a moment when God has shown up… this is the year of the Lord’s favor!”
I am still trying to grasp the implications of that anointing for me and for my call to Original Aurora. Is it possible that God has blessed me with the task of proclaiming to the poor and downtrodden and discouraged that in spite of what happened to them last year – that this year is different, this is the year of God’s favor? Can I really proclaim that this is the year that God is showing up… that this is the moment when everything changes: despair changes to hope; injustice changes to justice; broken pieces change into something beautiful?
I know that I don’t have this all figured out – but I am sure this is going to be quite a year.
